In the Books: Three book reviews
I enjoyed the last few days of my winter break, I enjoyed it by reading three books in three days. It's safe to say I got my groove of reading back.I started with The Twilight Wife, then The Good Neighbor, and lastly, The Couple Next Door.If you enjoyed Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train, all three of these will be right up your alley. They're all dark mysteries, and like I said I finished each of them in a day, all are total page turners. I didn't want to put any of them down.
The Twilight Wife
I came across this book because a few other bloggers had all read it around the same time and they all recommended it, after reading the summary, I knew I wanted to read it.I'm terrible at summaries but I'll give it a try, the main character, Kyra was in a diving accident, along with her husband, and she lost most of her memories from the last few years, however, she gets some of her them back in flashes. Very confusing pieces that she slowly puts together.Again, I'm not good at summaries because I don't want to give it all away!Between the mystery of the diving accident, her memories, the people on the island who kind of know her, her husband, there are so many twists. I stayed up way past my bedtime because I just couldn't put it down.It definitely has the mystery like The Girl on the Train did, so if you enjoyed that, you'll really like The Twilight wife.
The Good Neighbor
Usually when I love a book, I look at other books by the same author. Because The Twilight really grabbed a hold of me, it made me want to read even more, so the next day I started The Good Neighbor by A.J. Banner, same author of the Twilight Wife.First just a quick note, sometimes I like to buy the actual book, like I did with the Twilight wife, I'll admit, whether I buy the book sometimes depends on the cover. But the next two I just got on my kindle because I wanted to read them right away. If you do have a kindle, this book is free on kindle unlimited.Back to the Good Neighbor.I will point one thing out, I'm really big on the small details, I love when author's include them into books so the character feels more real and relatable. However, because this and the Twilight Wife were written by the same author, I did notice the main characters in each book had some similarities. It wasn't the overall story line but they had some similar traits.I would say this one has more twists than the Twilight Wife, and I really enjoyed this book but not as much as the Twilight Wife. Overall, it was just as much of a page turner, and I would say the end is a surprise but this one did seem to stretch on longer than I thought it would. It gets slow right before the climax. That being said, the ending was a surprise and I'll be honest sometimes I find it hard for a book to surprise me, I usually figure out what's going to happen (which is why I love Gone Girl so much because I had no idea what the hell was going to happen in that book.)So overall, I do recommend this book if you're looking for a page-turning mystery to read.
The Couple Next Door
This book was my favorite of the three. After finishing the other two, I was desperate to keep reading. I tried to start a few other books but they didn't hook me as quickly as the other two. I'm not sure how I came across this book, I searched through Amazon for a while. This one grabbed me instantly.I will say, it does have alternating points of view, which usually I'm not a fan of but it really worked for this story.Basically, Anne and Marco are at a dinner party with their neighbors and when they get home their baby is missing. Sounds like that's enough of a mystery but of course there is always more. Lots of secrets. It gets better and better as the story goes on.Another part I really enjoyed, the ending was just as good as the rest of the story. It kind of ends on a cliffhanger but in a good way. I actually enjoyed that it ended the way it did, another pet peeve in stories is when the buildup is really good and then the climax of the book happens and then ending just kind of slows and basically dies. Like the author spent all this time getting to the big reveal and then after that doesn't really know what to do so suddenly the book is just over. This book does not end that way. It could have a sequel or it could just end that way so you can just keep thinking about it for the rest of your life. Usually that would make me so mad but I really enjoyed it for this book.Of the three, I would say this is very much for the reader who loved Gone Girl.I have a number of books sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be read still, I'm not sure what's going to be next but Saturdays have been my one day to relax and do nothing so I'll start a new book tomorrow so be on the look out for that. Also if you have any book recommendations, let me know! Even though I have that stack, I always like adding to it!
